Winix C909 or 9800: shared room claim, different model records
The Winix C909 and 9800 are separate U.S. purifier models that converge on several headline features. Their reviewed Winix pages and manuals both give 522 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour, list a 95-watt input, support Winix Smart app control, offer odor-responsive Auto and light-triggered Sleep, and use compatible Filter A replacement kits. That overlap is useful—but it does not make the names, offers or exact packaging interchangeable.
Start with room and routine
If your room needs the stated 4.8-ACH benchmark, compare each at 522 square feet rather than treating Winix's separate one-hour-area headline as an equal room rating. Neither is a documented fit for the library's 606-square-foot large-room threshold. Both manuals describe a gas/odor-responsive Auto sensor, not a particle-specific Auto mode, and a colored air-quality light rather than a numeric on-unit PM2.5 display. The sensor can take several minutes to settle after power-on. Both support manual operation as well as app access, so neither suits someone requiring an appliance with no connected capability.
Meaningful differences and source gaps
The C909 product page lists 17.2 pounds and 16.5 × 11.3 × 23.2 inches; its linked manual changes depth to 11.4 inches. The 9800 sources list 18.7 pounds and 16.5 × 11.8 × 23.2 inches. The C909 is lighter and has a shallower stated body, although neither supplies the wall clearance needed for a built-in fit. Both publish only a minimum noise figure, not a maximum across all speeds; a strict noise cap remains unresolved for each.
The most important C909 caveat is package quantity: its current page says a new unit includes one HEPA and four carbon filters, while its manual's standard package diagram lists two and eight. The manual says a certified refurbished C909 has one and four. The 9800 manual's ordinary package list differs, so verify what is in the box instead of projecting one model's package onto the other. Their shared Filter A compatibility is confirmed, and specialty replacement profiles are separately available for the C909; optional filter marketing does not prove a purifier-box inclusion or improve the stated room rating. The 9800's source record has its own specialty-filter-detail gaps.
Which one?
Choose between them only after checking the exact SKU, included filters, physical location and control requirements. The C909 currently has an exact U.S. SKU documented on its manufacturer page; the 9800 remains its own model in the library despite its similar room and filter plan. Neither should be promoted as faster on the available 522-square-foot claim. Compare the C909 review and 9800 review for the individual filter schedules and unresolved dimensions. Both manuals warn that a room purifier does not remove carbon monoxide.
