Setup and care

Set up and maintain the Blueair DustMagnet 5440i

The DustMagnet 5440i arrives with two upper-and-lower filter compartments, removable legs and a built-in top designed to resemble a small side table. Set it up and maintain the pair of filters as a pair; a filter reminder does not mean that one replacement cartridge necessarily covers both compartments.

First setup: open both filter hatches

  1. Place the unplugged unit carefully top-down on a stable, soft surface and screw on its four legs, following the manual's setup diagrams.
  2. Open the upper hatch, remove the main filter and discard its protective plastic. Reinstall the filter and close the hatch.
  3. Repeat for the lower hatch and second main filter. The 5440i is supplied with two main ComboFilters and two pre-filters; do not run it without the filters or with protective wrapping left in place.
  4. Turn the unit upright on a stable floor surface, leave at least four inches around it and plug the supplied power lead directly into a suitable wall outlet. Blueair's manual says not to use an extension cord or power strip.

The tabletop-style top is part of the body design, but this is not a countertop appliance: the manual calls for floor placement, prohibits liquids on the top and limits top loading to 10 kilograms. The clearance and unobstructed intakes matter more than placing it flush against furniture.

Run the sensor and app according to your routine

Local buttons switch power, fan speed, Auto and Night. Auto adjusts airflow based on the built-in particle sensor. Night dims the indicator and uses a lower fan setting. The indicator reports PM2.5 by color; the exact manual does not describe a numeric PM2.5 number on the purifier itself. For remote controls, schedules or filter notifications, pair the optional Blueair app. Blueair's support setup instructions call for Bluetooth during pairing and a 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi network; basic physical operation remains available if connected control is not wanted.

Blueair recommends keeping doors and windows closed while operating the purifier and using it in a room no larger than the recommendation. The current product page lists 335 square feet at 4.8 ACH; the manual lists 357 square feet at the same rate, while Blueair's support table shows 352 square feet without stating its rate basis. Keep the discrepancy in mind and use the conservative current-page figure for a strict fit choice. An air-quality indicator is a particle signal, not a direct test for every gas or odor source.

Weekly and seasonal filter care

For the pre-filters, the manual recommends weekly cleaning. Turn the purifier off and unplug it before opening the hatches; wipe each pre-filter with a dust cloth or vacuum it with a soft brush. Avoid forcing objects into the openings. The two main ComboFilters are not washable or reusable. Blueair says the device estimates their remaining life from use and sensor readings, then signals when replacement is due. The manual gives a six-to-twelve-month range depending on room conditions, the live purifier page says up to six months, and the replacement page says up to nine. Treat these as estimates rather than a fixed promise.

When the indicator calls for replacement, disconnect the unit, open both hatches and remove the old cartridges. The exact replacement listing is the Blueair DustMagnet ComboFilter 5400, SKU 106322; its compatibility statement names the 5410i and 5440i. The filter page lists one replacement filter, but the manual says the purifier contains two main filters. Check the package count and obtain the number needed for both compartments before starting the change. Remove new filters from their protective wrapping, close both hatches fully, reconnect power and hold the fan-speed button for 15 seconds to reset the filter timer.

Clean the sensor inlet when filter care is due

The manual places the air-quality sensor inlet at the rear. When changing filters, unplug the purifier, vacuum the sensor inlet gently, remove its cover and clean the sensor with a cotton swab as shown; do not poke the opening with a finger or another object. Wipe the exterior with a soft, clean, damp cloth and let it dry before reconnecting. Do not wash the main filters or use solvents or corrosive cleaners on the body.

Instructions are based on Blueair's exact 5440i product page, the linked DustMagnet manual, Blueair's DustMagnet support page and exact ComboFilter 5400 listing. See the full 5440i review for conflicts among manufacturer room, dimension, CADR and filter-life figures.
