Blueair model fit
Blueair Mini Max Auto vs 511i Max: local controls or a larger room?
The Blue Pure Mini Max Auto and Blue Pure 511i Max are both cylindrical Blueair purifiers for smaller rooms, but they are not the same device with different trim. The Mini Max Auto is a light, local-control model rated for 105 square feet at 4.8 ACH. The 511i Max is a larger app-connected machine rated for 237 square feet at the same published rate. Start with the room and the controls you will actually use, then verify the replacement filter by model name.
Start with the repeated-cleaning area
If the room is no larger than about 105 square feet and you want a compact unit to move between a desk, dorm or small bedroom, the Mini Max Auto is the easier physical fit: Blueair lists it at 12 inches high, 6.7 inches wide/deep and 2.8 pounds. Its page lists 10 watts. Keep the manual’s four-inch clearance around it and do not assume its square-foot number covers a connected room.
When the room is above 105 square feet, the Mini Max Auto no longer meets its own 4.8-ACH recommendation. The 511i Max’s current table lists 237 square feet at 4.8 ACH; it is 14.5 inches high, 9.3 inches wide/deep, 4.2 pounds and 17 watts. That extra capacity comes with a larger footprint. For a threshold between 106 and 237 square feet, the 511i is the closer fit of these two, provided the room is reasonably enclosed and its larger shell can sit with open airflow. If the room exceeds 237 square feet at that repeated-cleaning rate, look beyond both rather than substituting a slower one-change claim.
The “Auto” distinction is useful
Both have Auto operation based on PM2.5 and a qualitative color indicator, but only the 511i Max offers Blueair app functions. Blueair support says its Mini models do not connect to the app, and the Mini Max Auto manual describes two local buttons and a five-color status light rather than a numeric particle screen. So the Mini’s “Auto” means the purifier adjusts locally from PM2.5—not that it has remote phone control. The 511i Max adds app connectivity while still retaining local controls; neither should be selected if a numeric PM2.5 reading on the unit is essential.
Night operation also needs a careful read. The Mini Max Auto manual names Night mode, which lowers fan speed and display brightness. The 511i Max manual also names Night and three numbered speeds. Neither feature should be confused with a separate night-light. The Mini manual says its ionizer activates automatically at fan speed 3 and stops at a different speed or when the unit is off; Auto may choose speed 3. If avoiding that mode is important, a lower manually selected speed is the documented choice.
Filter parts are not interchangeable by family name
The Mini Max Auto package lists a Particle & Carbon filter, and its cloth pre-filter is washable. The dedicated Blue Pure Mini Max replacement-filter page calls its filter compatible only with “Blue Pure Mini Max,” without spelling out “Auto,” even though the exact Auto product page presents filter choices. For a required specialty cartridge or exact future replacement, confirm the Auto model code with Blueair before buying. Its manual estimates six to nine months for a filter change depending on use and indoor pollution, while the product page recommends six months; follow the red indicator and actual conditions.
The 511i Max belongs to the separate F5MAX filter family. Blueair’s exact 511i page and filter material document the Particle & Carbon base and separate AllergenBlock/SmokeBlock options. Do not order an F5MAX for the Mini Max Auto or infer that an FMINI fits the 511i simply because both names include “Mini” or “Max.” For either model, unplug first, keep the reusable fabric sleeve fully dry after washing and replace—not wash—the main cartridge.
Choose the constraint that changes the answer
Pick the Mini Max Auto if a 105-square-foot room, low body weight, local PM2.5 automation and a color-only indicator are enough—and app control is not a requirement. Pick the 511i Max when the room needs the larger 237-square-foot 4.8-ACH rating or you want app control and its exact F5MAX filter system. If your essential condition is a numeric CADR, the Mini page does not publish one; the 511i lists separate pollen, dust and smoke CADRs rather than one generic number. Neither is a confirmed match for a strict dB(A) ceiling: the Mini page gives unweighted dB, and the 511i sources disagree on the high endpoint and do not state A-weighting.
These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent room test. A room’s ceiling height, open doorway, source of particles and the speed you expect to tolerate all affect practical cleaning. A larger room, a documented numeric monitor, or a need for no ionizer hardware calls for a different choice, not a looser interpretation of either product name.
