Setup and care
Winix AT40 setup and filter compatibility
The Winix AT40 starts with a cylindrical all-in-one filter already packaged inside the machine, but the clear shipping bag must be removed before use. The current Winix manual covers AT40 and AT41 together; the exact AT40 product page identifies the U.S. offer SKU 1022-0238-00. Follow the manual for the model on your unit rather than borrowing the rectangular C535 filter-loading steps.
Open the base and remove the shipping bag
- Turn the AT40 upside down on a stable, protected surface.
- Use the bottom handle to turn the filter cover counter-clockwise, then pull the cover away.
- Turn the filter’s upper cap counter-clockwise to separate it and access the clear protective bag.
- Remove and discard the clear bag, but leave the fine-mesh pre-filter in place. Reassemble the filter and cover in the square-hole orientation shown in the manual, close the handle, and return the purifier upright.
The package contents list two 360-degree all-in-one True HEPA canisters for the regular product. Winix says each lasts about 12 months, with actual replacement timing dependent on conditions; the manual’s note says a certified-refurbished unit comes with one canister. Check which offer is in the box rather than assuming a used or refurbished machine still has both.
Clean only the part the manual identifies
The manual calls for cleaning the pre-filter with a vacuum or soft brush and says the filter cannot be washed. Do not rinse the HEPA/carbon canister or treat it as a washable fabric sleeve. Unplug the unit before maintenance, and vacuum its interior every one to two months. When replacing the all-in-one canister, hold the Filter Reset button for at least five seconds until the red indicator stops blinking and you hear the beep.
Resolve the replacement-code conflict before ordering
The AT40/AT41 manual names Filter Z 1712-0121-00, and the AT40 page links to Filter Z. The dedicated Winix Filter Z page, however, lists C610 and C710 compatibility, not AT40. Because those manufacturer references disagree, confirm the part against your exact model label with Winix before purchasing a replacement. The all-in-one canister contains activated carbon, but that is not evidence for separate smoke, pet or premium replacement options.
Give the cylinder breathing room
Set the AT40 upright on a hard, level indoor surface. The manual asks for 12–18 inches from walls and nearby electronics; keep its intake and top outlet clear. Avoid damp rooms, steam, direct sun and oily cooking residue. Although the body is cylindrical, its airflow needs room around it. The product page and manual publish slightly different body dimensions, so avoid relying on either measurement for a tight enclosure until Winix confirms the exact offer’s size.
Auto operation is available, but the inspected manual does not identify whether its Smart Sensors respond to particles or odor/gas. The three-color indicator and short text status are not a numeric PM2.5 meter. See the Winix AT40 assessment for that control tradeoff and the unresolved filter crosswalk.
