Alen BreatheSmart 45i Air Purifier review

Mid-size BreatheSmart purifier with four speeds, local and app controls, particle-responsive Auto, color feedback, a switchable ionizer and three filter configurations. The current page-area claim conflicts with Alen’s area guide, so strict room-size matching is withheld.

A useful fit for

A current Alen BreatheSmart choice for a household that values particle-responsive Auto, local control and the exact model’s stated room claim, while accepting that a strict 4.8-ACH room size is not confirmed.

The main tradeoff

Current 45i offer, single indoor household room; room-area claims conflict and offer generation is not individually mapped to the two manuals. Follow the exact filter/SKU selection and treat only a supported complete arrangement as eligible.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does this Alen BreatheSmart 45i have sensor-based automatic fan-speed control?

The exact Alen current collection page and model manual/support materials document automatic particle-oriented speed adjustment; the matcher does not infer a gas sensor.

Can this current offer be used for a strict 4.8-ACH room-size threshold?

No. The page gives an hourly/30-minute area claim but no 4.8-ACH basis; that claim must not be substituted for a repeated-air-change rating.

Does the exact current model support app control and still have local buttons?

Alen lists Wi-Fi/app compatibility for the current BreatheSmart listing and the exact manual documents controls on the appliance; app control is not a smart-home integration claim.

Will a dedicated Night-mode requirement be satisfied?

No dedicated lower-airflow Night mode is established. On the 25i/35i, Sleep/light behavior turns the display dark while the purifier continues running.

Alen positions the BreatheSmart 45i between its taller 75i and the more compact 35i and 25i. The exact current U.S. page lists a 25-by-15-by-8.5-inch body, a 14-pound weight, four fan speeds, a color-changing air-quality ring, automatic operation and Wi-Fi/app control. This combination is useful for a bedroom or living area where you want automatic particle response and app scheduling without moving up to the largest chassis. The important caution is that the manufacturer’s area figures do not agree across its own pages, so this is not a safe choice for an essential room-size threshold until that conflict is resolved.

Keep the room claim separate from the air-change requirement

The 45i product page says it can cover up to 1,900 square feet every hour or 950 square feet every 30 minutes. The separate Alen area guide gives lower numbers for the 45i. Neither source provides the same explicit 4.8-ACH basis required by the finder’s strict room-size options. I therefore keep its 4.8-ACH area unknown, and I do not use either disputed hourly figure for a required minimum. The listing’s CADR is stated as 255 CFM, and the per-speed airflow figures are 80, 120, 190 and 255 CFM. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements, and they should not be converted into an area rating by guesswork.

Alen lists a 24–50 dBA noise range and 1.6–64 watts of power for the current page. The included power supply is external. A manual and a V2 manual are both in the official support directory. The current product page supports app and Wi-Fi operation, but the offer variants do not identify which manual generation a particular finish/filter configuration uses. The product image in the gallery is labeled 45i V2. Treat the current app feature as a page-level offer fact, while the precise hardware-to-manual revision mapping is still not established.

Controls and the optional ionizer

Alen describes automatic speed adjustment and the color ring, while the manuals show physical controls. That gives this model two practical routines: leave the sensor-based Auto setting to adjust fan speed, or choose one of four speeds yourself. A color indicator is feedback, not an on-unit numeric PM2.5 reading. The app adds remote control, scheduling and filter-status functions according to Alen’s product copy; the manufacturer’s app compatibility note does not establish smart-speaker control.

The product includes an ionizer stage that can be switched locally on the documented manual. That is a meaningful choice for households that want the option to disable it rather than a reason to assume the unit must run with ionization on. Alen reports its own ozone test statement when the ionizer is engaged or disengaged; those figures are manufacturer claims, not a third-party safety assessment. If an ionizer-free appliance is essential, the 35i or 25i is a cleaner Alen comparison because their current pages list no ionizer.

Filter selection and maintenance

The current offer lists six finishes and three included-filter choices: Essential Pure, Advanced Fresh and Ultimate Odor. This is an unusual flexibility for the mid-sized model, but the replacement media are proprietary and not washable. Alen’s current page says Pure filters are typically replaced every 9–12 months and Fresh or Odor options every 6–8 months. Actual interval depends on setting and environment. Vacuuming the prefilter layer is a maintenance step; it does not clean or renew the replaceable media. The Forever Guarantee is conditional on registration and an active filter-subscription requirement, so compare those terms with your desired refill routine.

Compare the 45i with the 75i when output and body scale matter, with the 35i when you want a shorter unit, and with the 25i if the footprint and lower power draw are more important. The 45i’s strengths are its four-speed, app-capable, sensor-auto arrangement, replaceable filter options and optional ionizer. Its main limitation for a requirement-driven buyer is not a missing feature; it is the unsettled translation from manufacturer area copy to a documented repeated-air-change rating. Do not let the larger hourly headline answer a question it was not written to answer.
