A useful fit for

The exact product details state 250 sq ft at 4.8 ACH. The separate 1208-sq-ft title figure is not the same repeated-cleaning rating; 250 clears small but not medium. A fit decision is still bounded by the stated repeated-cleaning rate and required unobstructed air path.

The main tradeoff

The HFD320 has five manual settings—Max, Pollen, General, Quiet Clean and Sleep—plus a timer, filter-status bar and oscillation. Neither the bar nor mode names indicate particle sensing. The exact Store page adds model dimensions but no numeric sound or rated wattage.

The Honeywell Air Genius 5 HFD320 is a manually controlled tower for a room that fits the maker’s 250-square-foot, 4.8-ACH rating. Its main difference from the simpler Air Genius 3 is not a sensor or app: it adds more named fan settings, a longer auto-off timer and a soft base light. The HFD320 is still a small-room choice in a repeated-air-change comparison, even though its product title carries a much larger square-foot number.

Compare 250 square feet at 4.8 ACH

The HFD320 product page states a room size of 250 square feet at up to 4.8 air changes per hour, based on smoke CADR at the highest setting. Its page title also says “1208Ft²,” but the details identify 250 square feet at the faster repeated-cleaning basis. Do not compare those figures as though they describe the same rate. Honeywell cautions that room circulation depends on layout and cannot guarantee all room air passes through the filter. The 250-square-foot value clears the finder’s 219-square-foot small tier, not the 358-square-foot medium tier.

The exact Honeywell Store listing gives the body dimensions as 9.97 × 9.92 × 26.81 inches (L × W × H) and weight as 13.05 pounds. Use those as the listed body measures, not as required furniture clearance. The HFD32X manual says to put the upright unit on a firm, level surface with grilles unobstructed and the front facing away from the nearest wall or furniture. Body size and the space needed for airflow are separate practical questions.

Five levels are not five sensors

The linked HFD30X/31X/32X manual identifies the HFD320's five fan levels as Max, Pollen, General, Quiet Clean and Sleep, selected at the unit, plus oscillation. Its mode names are not an air-quality sensor. The manual says the unit starts at General and waits for the user to choose another level. HFD320 has no documented particle-sensing Auto mode, app-control plan or numeric PM2.5 display. This corrects retailer copy that has elsewhere named different cleaning choices: use the model-linked manual for the HFD320's exact settings.

Its auto-off timer can be set for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours, and the bottom accent light can be off, low or high. A filter status bar gradually illuminates as the electronic timer reaches the check interval after continuous operation; Honeywell says it is a reminder to check the filters, not an air-quality sensor. If you want the display to react to room particles, that feature is not established here. The HFD360 instead has a VOC Auto mode, though its current product page says the device is no longer connected.

Two pre-filter choices, one slot

The HFD320 uses a permanent washable ifD particle filter and a pre-filter. A washable foam pre-filter is supplied, and Honeywell also lists an odor- and VOC-reducing K pre-filter in the box. The manual is explicit that the pre-filters are alternatives, not layers to stack: keep the washable option for reuse, or remove it and install K for the described odor benefit. The K filter is not washable and should be replaced about every three months.

Check and clean the ifD element and washable pre-filter roughly every three months, or sooner in dusty conditions. Turn off and unplug the device before servicing; rinse the ifD element, gently wash with mild soap if needed, then wait until it is entirely dry before reinstalling. A damp filter can damage the unit, and the manual says not to use a dishwasher. The routine is a real tradeoff: washable media reduce routine cartridge replacement, but require space and time for washing and drying. The optional K media adds a recurring replacement task for general household odors.

The manufacturer says ifD captures up to 99.9 percent of listed airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger that pass through the filter, and the manual describes a separate ionizer stage. This is not the same construction as a mechanical HEPA filter, and a pass-through figure does not describe the share of an entire room’s air that is cleaned. Honeywell lists a five-year limited warranty. The exact Store listing now supplies a body footprint and height, but no numeric maximum dB(A) or rated wattage; a strict noise or power cap should not be based on guesswork.

Who should choose the HFD320?

It suits a buyer who wants direct control, oscillation, a Sleep setting, five preset cleaning levels and a washable main filter for a room within the stated 250-square-foot repeated-cleaning area. Compared with HFD300, it serves 25 more rated square feet and has additional modes and a longer timer. Compared with the current HFD310, the room rating is the same, so the HFD320's five named levels, filter-status bar and two-to-twelve-hour timer are the more meaningful differences. The discontinued HFD280 Compact has a 150-square-foot area and its own six-inch clearance instruction; it is an earlier reference, not a current buying alternative. The HFD320 does not meet a need for particle-sensor Auto, app scheduling, numeric PM2.5 readout or room coverage above 250 square feet at 4.8 ACH.

A separate Honeywell Store listing identifies an Air Genius 5 HFD323 with the same 250-square-foot rating and links this HFD320-series manual, but that page's copy names a different set of control selections. Do not transfer those HFD323 mode labels to the HFD320 or assume the exact controls from a similar photo; check the exact model label and manual for a used or retailer-specific listing.
