A useful fit for

A household that accepts a fragrance cartridge and a deliberately slow 1-ACH area basis, wants local particle feedback and Auto response, and has room for the 25.98-inch-tall body plus three inches of open space. It does not meet a strict 4.8-ACH, 2-ACH, CADR, numerical-noise, app, or TVOC-sensor requirement on the reviewed evidence.

The main tradeoff

HP232 adds an included, adjustable scent cartridge to the 1,200-sq-ft-at-1-ACH class; that fragrance is not a gas sensor or proof that pollutants are removed. Its particle-cleaning system uses a replaceable HEPA multi-filter, with six-to-twelve-month replacement guidance and three-month rotation; it is not a five-year NeverChange filter. The source does not substantiate a faster ACH area, CADR, app control, separate TVOC sensing or numeric sound limit.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the 1,200-square-foot claim at one air change per hour fit your use, without treating it as a faster-room rating?

Shark states 1,200 sq ft at 1 ACH. It does not publish a 2-ACH/4.8-ACH area or CFM CADR for HP232.

Would you need repeated fast air changes rather than the listed one-change-per-hour room figure?

HP232 has no documented faster-rate area; its 1,200-sq-ft claim is not a 4.8-ACH claim.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is a local numeric PM2.5 reading useful, while a separate gas/TVOC reading is not essential?

The HP232-linked manual lists local PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 displays. Neither the product page nor manual confirms a TVOC/gas sensor.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you require app control, or are the physical controls enough?

The manual documents local buttons and Auto; reviewed HP232 materials do not establish app/Wi-Fi features, so an essential app need fails.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can you accept an included fragrance cartridge that you can set to Off or remove?

One odor-neutralizer cartridge is listed in the box; the HP232 manual gives Off/Low/Medium/High and explains removal. If the offer must not include a scent cartridge, it is a mismatch.

Can the 12.48-inch square body fit below your height limit while preserving the manual clearance?

The exact page lists 12.48 by 12.48 by 25.98 inches; the manual asks for three inches around walls/objects.

The HP232 is worth considering when you want a large cylindrical purifier with on-unit particle feedback and you actively want the option of a fragrance cartridge. Its most important limit is easy to miss in a room-size headline: Shark's exact product page states 1,200 square feet at one air change per hour. That is a slow comparison basis, not a statement that the unit delivers four or five full room cleanings an hour. If repeated fast cleaning, a strict CADR, or a 4.8-ACH area is essential, the reviewed material does not let this model pass that requirement.

The room-size number needs its air-change basis

Shark gives the HP232 a 1,200-square-foot room figure at 1 ACH. That can help compare large areas when you accept the same one-change basis, but it is not interchangeable with a 4.8-ACH rating often used for faster repeated cleaning. Shark's page also contains a separate 12,000-square-foot sentence without an air-change basis; I do not use that line as a comparable room rating. I could not find a published 2-ACH area, 4.8-ACH area, or CFM CADR in the product page or the linked HP200 Series guide. The manufacturer’s 99.98% particle-capture statement has its own cited 0.1–0.2-micron test basis; it is not a room-clearance measurement or an independent result.

In practice, choose the HP232 for a room where its one-change figure is a useful reference and the purifier can run steadily. If smoke events, cooking, or allergy periods make you need faster turnover, compare products with a directly stated faster-rate area or CADR instead of scaling this number yourself. A fan speed or sensor response does not turn the 1-ACH figure into a higher-rate promise.

Its distinctive feature adds a scent choice

The box lists one NANOSEAL HEPA filter and one Odor Neutralizer Technology cartridge. The cartridge releases fragrance while Shark says it guards against odors. It is a separate module, not an additional particle filter, a TVOC detector, or proof that every odor or gas is removed. The HP232 manual gives Off, Low, Medium, and High dial settings; it also explains that the cartridge assembly can be removed. If fragrance is a positive feature for you, the dial lets you choose intensity. If you are scent-sensitive or simply do not want a fragrance pod in your purchase, prefer an offer that does not include one rather than treating the Off setting as the same thing.

Maintenance is part of that choice. Shark's guide says to replace the odor cartridge about every three months or as needed; fragrance can fade over time. The guide cautions against opening the pod or inhaling it directly and says to keep it away from children, pets, heat, sparks, and open flame. The replacement part listed on the HP232 page is 1541FC3000. The purifier’s separate HEPA multi-filter is not washable: the guide recommends replacement about every six to twelve months and rotating it every three months. Those are distinct consumables and distinct chores.

What the display and controls tell you

CleanSense IQ gives local particle feedback, and the HP232-linked owner guide describes Air Info choices for PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and a Clean Air percentage. Auto adjusts the fan in response to particle readings; the manual recommends Auto for ordinary use and explains that higher fan speeds can be useful in dirtier conditions. This can make the unit easier to live with than a purifier whose only feedback is a filter timer. Still, the display is a reading at the appliance, not a room-wide guarantee. The reviewed sources do not identify a separate TVOC or gas sensor, so this model should not be selected to monitor volatile gases. App or Wi-Fi control is also not established; its documented control plan is the local panel.

The exact HP232 product page says four purification speeds. The family guide's generic controls section describes five numbered settings but notes that Maximum is available only on select SKUs, so I would not assume a fifth HP232 speed. The control list includes a one-to-twelve-hour shutoff timer, three display-brightness choices, filter-life status, and child lock. The manual does not identify a dedicated Sleep mode, and a dim display is not the same as a quieter fan setting. A remote control is listed separately as an optional accessory, not in the box.

Fit, upkeep, and alternatives

At 12.48 inches across and 25.98 inches tall, the Charcoal Grey body needs more than its footprint. The manual calls for a level surface at least three inches from walls and objects, with its front panel facing away from the nearest wall and the intake left unobstructed. Its listed weight is 13.6 pounds. Check the height plus clearance before choosing a corner or shelf-like alcove; it is a floor appliance, not a compact desktop purifier.

For a similar large-room claim without a fragrance cartridge in the box, compare Shark's HP202: its manufacturer page also uses a 1,200-square-foot figure at 1 ACH, but its listed box contents do not include the odor cartridge. That is the cleaner fit when you want local particle information and Auto but not added scent. A NeverChange model such as HP302 is the alternative to investigate if reducing routine HEPA-filter purchases is your priority, though its own room-area wording and functions should be assessed on their separate evidence rather than borrowed from HP232.

Bottom line: HP232 suits a buyer who wants a large, locally controlled particle-sensing unit and deliberately chooses the optional fragrance experience. The one-ACH area basis, recurring cartridge, and replaceable filter deserve more attention than the broad square-foot headline. For strict high-rate cleaning, gas sensing, app control, a numeric noise ceiling, or a no-fragrance-in-box requirement, choose another documented configuration.
