Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Max HP302 review

A tall, white cylindrical Shark purifier with five fan levels, local PM1/PM2.5/PM10 readings, a particle-responsive Auto mode and an included optional-fragrance cartridge. Shark states up to 1,400 sq ft in one hour, but the reviewed material does not give that claim an ACH basis or publish CFM CADR.

A useful fit for

A household that values a taller floor-standing unit, local numeric particle readings, particle-responsive Auto and a long-life HEPA-filter claim, and does not need a documented standard-rate room area, CFM CADR, app schedule or numeric noise ceiling.

The main tradeoff

The advertised “up to 1,400 sq ft in just one hour” claim is not assigned a stated ACH basis in the reviewed HP302 materials. Treat the 4.8-ACH area, 2-ACH area, exact 1-ACH area and CFM CADR as unknown. The included odor cartridge releases fragrance; its replacement schedule conflicts between the series guide and official accessory listing.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you require the exact 1400-square-foot statement to be specified at a standard ACH or CFM basis?

The official headline says up to 1400 square feet in one hour, but does not specify an exact ACH or CFM CADR in the reviewed material. Those strict numeric fields remain unknown.

Do you want automatic particle response and readable local PM values?

The HP300 Series guide documents particle-responsive Auto and on-unit PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 display options.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the 24.72-inch body fit with the required airflow gap?

The exact page lists 24.72 inches high. The series guide requires at least 3 inches from walls/objects, so body height is not the full clearance envelope.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is long-life HEPA media worth the size and upkeep of separate dust screens and fragrance cartridge?

The guide states up to five years only under its stated test conditions; the two mesh dust screens still need cleaning and the fragrance cartridge has conflicting schedule guidance.

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Max HP302 is a tall, white floor unit built around a long-life filter claim, local particle feedback and a fragrance cartridge. Shark says it covers up to 1,400 square feet “in just one hour.” That line may look unusually large beside HP202’s 1,200-square-foot figure, but the HP302 materials reviewed here do not assign the one-hour claim an air-changes-per-hour (ACH) basis. They also do not publish a CFM CADR. Do not compare it as a verified 1,400-square-foot room at 4.8 ACH—or even as exactly 1 ACH—without a stated rate basis.

Room-area language that needs a careful read

The manufacturer’s HP302 page describes up to 1,400 square feet in one hour, and the current category listing uses “per hour.” Neither source, nor the reviewed HP300 Series guide, supplies an exact ACH number or a CFM CADR for that claim. The finder therefore leaves its 1-, 2- and 4.8-ACH room areas unknown. If your essential threshold is a standardized repeated-cleaning rate, choose a model with that exact basis instead of treating “one hour” as an ACH guarantee. A single floor purifier also cannot be assumed to serve multiple separated rooms merely because the headline area is large; doors, walls, ceiling height and furniture affect circulation.

At the body, HP302 measures 13.27 inches across and 24.72 inches high, weighs 13.45 pounds, and is listed at 54 watts rated input with 86.2 watts peak. The series guide asks for a level floor placement with at least three inches between the unit and surrounding walls or objects, and says to keep the intakes clear. That added breathing room belongs in your placement plan; the dimensions are not the whole opening required.

Useful local feedback, with sensor limits

The HP300 Series guide documents five fan choices—Quiet, Low, Medium, High and Maximum—plus a particle-responsive Auto mode. Manual speed changes switch Auto off. The front display can show PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 readings, along with a Clean Air percentage and colored status ring. Shark explains that “Clean Air 100%” means the measured PM1.0–10 concentration is at or below the sensor’s detection limit; it does not say that the room is free of pollutants, gases or odors. This is useful local feedback, not a calibrated substitute for a separate air-quality monitor.

There is a shut-off timer from one to twelve hours, a control lock, and brightness adjustment that can turn the display lights fully off while the purifier continues running. Eco behavior has a more consequential tradeoff: after the Clean Air reading stays at 100% for five minutes in Auto, the fan switches off until the sensor detects a significant particle change. That can reduce time spent running the fan, but it is not continuous circulation. The materials reviewed do not establish an app schedule, Wi-Fi requirement or numeric sound ceiling, so those should not be assumed if they are essential.

Long-life HEPA is not zero-maintenance

Shark’s “up to five years” NeverChange language has a specific test basis in the HP300 Series guide: GB/T18801-2015 P.CCM, allowing a 50% CADR decline, a 300-square-foot cleaning area and twelve hours daily on Maximum. That is not a guarantee that every household will get five years at its preferred setting. Shark separately claims 99.98% particle capture under IEST-RP-CC007.3 for 0.1–0.2-micron particles; read that as the manufacturer’s filter-test claim, not a whole-room performance measurement or health outcome.

The included routine still matters. HP302’s box lists one NeverChange HEPA filter, two mesh dust screens under the Debris Defense label, and an Odor Neutralizer cartridge. The guide permits vacuuming or rinsing the mesh screens, but they must dry fully for twelve hours after rinsing; the HEPA media is not washable. The compatible replacement filter, HE3FKPET, is listed by Shark for HP300, HP301, HP302 and HP305 and includes its own carbon for household odors. It is a filter part, not an alternate purifier or a second included filter.

Fragrance and who should compare alternatives

The odor cartridge is a separate scent-releasing feature, not simply more filtration. The manual describes Off, Low, Medium and High dial settings and cautions against direct contact or inhalation. If fragrance is unwelcome, use the dial’s Off position rather than assuming the odor feature is required for particle cleaning. There is a source conflict to check before planning upkeep: the HP300 guide says replace cartridges every three months or as needed, while Shark’s compatible two-cartridge accessory listing says every six months. Follow current model-specific instructions rather than merging those schedules.

HP302 fits a household that values an on-unit particle display, local buttons, automatic particle response and the prospect of fewer HEPA replacements—and can accommodate a fairly large, 24.72-inch body with clear floor space. It is a poor strict match when you need a documented 4.8-ACH room rating, a minimum CADR, exact 1-ACH data, a numerical sound limit or confirmed app control. Compare HP202 if its explicit 1,200-square-foot-at-1-ACH figure is relevant; that is a slower-rate claim and does not make HP302’s unqualified one-hour number directly comparable. For performance at a chosen ACH, prefer a model whose page or manual states the same rate.
