A useful fit for

For a U.S. household room up to Winix’s stated 370 sq ft at 4.8 ACH when local odor-gas Auto, a three-color cue, a Turbo button and replaceable Filter A profiles are useful; it has no app and no numeric on-unit PM2.5 reading.

The main tradeoff

The 15-inch-wide body requires 12–18 inches of wall and electronics clearance. Auto responds to odorous gas, not a documented particle sensor. Filter care is split between a washable mesh pre-filter, carbon every three months and HEPA about yearly. Rated power is 70 W in the exact Rev.06 manual; CFM CADR units and maximum noise are not confirmed. The product page's Filter Pack P link conflicts with the dedicated 5500-only compatibility page.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the C535 meet a 358-square-foot room requirement at 4.8 air changes per hour?

Yes. Winix lists 370 square feet at the 4.8-ACH benchmark. That supports the medium room tier but not the large 606-square-foot tier; slower-rate examples are not substitutes.

Can the C535 run automatic odor-sensor control without a phone app?

Yes. Its local Auto changes speed from the Smart Sensor's odorous-gas response, and the product page lists no smart features. It is not particle-sensor Auto.

Can I read a numeric PM2.5 value at the C535 itself?

No numeric value is documented. The unit has a three-color indicator, which is not the same as a particle-number display.

Does C535 Auto respond to odor gas or particles?

The manual identifies an odorous-gas Smart Sensor and does not document a particle sensor. Choose odor/gas response if that is the target; a particle-target requirement remains unmet.

Can I use a PetGuard carbon replacement with the C535?

Yes, as an optional replacement rather than an included feature. Winix's PetGuard compatibility page names C535 and says the set targets pet dander, hair and odors.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the C535 fit a 70-watt maximum input requirement?

Yes, at the inclusive boundary: the exact C535 manual lists 70 W. It would not meet a 69-W cap.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the 15-inch-wide C535 fit a 15-inch body-width limit?

Yes, exactly at the stated body-only limit. The manual still requires 12–18 inches of additional space from walls; body width alone is not its operating footprint.

The Winix C535 is the more room-capable local-control choice in this pair of straightforward Winix purifiers: its published 4.8-air-changes-per-hour rating is 370 square feet, compared with 246 square feet for the smaller A231. The current U.S. product page names the C535 and its offer SKU is 1021-0021-20. It suits someone who wants physical buttons, automatic response to household odors, a color status light and a true Turbo selection, but does not need an app or numerical particle readout.

Use the 370-square-foot figure for repeated cleaning

Winix rates the C535 at 370 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour. Use it for repeated cleaning, not the page’s larger, slower-rate examples. A rating assumes a defined room and does not guarantee the same result in a high-ceilinged space, an open floor plan or several connected rooms. If your essential target is a 358-square-foot room at the 4.8-ACH tier, the C535 clears that threshold; it does not meet the 606-square-foot large tier.

The specification table also lists dust, pollen and smoke CADR numbers of 243, 246 and 232. The table does not state their units, so I do not convert them into or match them as CFM values. If a minimum pollutant-specific CADR in CFM is essential, look for a source that states the unit explicitly rather than filling the gap from a familiar convention.

Auto responds to odor gas, not a documented PM2.5 reading

The page calls the controls “dual smart sensors,” while the manual identifies a Smart Sensor that detects odorous gas and a separate light sensor. In Auto, the fan goes to Low for a good indicated condition, Medium for fair and High for poor. That is a useful automatic response to odors, but the manual does not describe a particle sensor or numeric PM2.5 display. The three-color indicator is a broad cue, not a measurement you can compare with an independent particle monitor. There is no app or Wi-Fi function listed for this model.

At start-up, the air-quality light cycles through colors for about 30 seconds, and the manual says the Smart Sensor takes about four minutes to settle before normal operation. Do not assume an immediate color change is a calibrated reading. You can still choose a fan speed at the unit when you prefer a fixed setting.

Three filter-media layers, plus separate PlasmaWave

Winix’s current product page describes three-stage filtration: a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, an activated-carbon filter and a True HEPA filter. PlasmaWave is a separate technology, not a fourth replacement filter. The manual calls the overall arrangement “4-stage air purification” when it counts PlasmaWave along with those three filter elements; the difference is counting language, not an extra piece of filter media. The page’s True HEPA capture percentage is a manufacturer test claim and should not be read as a room-specific promise.

The manual package diagram lists one permanent pre-filter, one HEPA and four activated-carbon sheets. The matching Filter A set (115115) is identified for the C535 and is also sold in PetGuard and SmokeGuard forms. Those are replacement choices, not four filter modes included with the machine. The PetGuard set is explicitly listed as C535-compatible and targets pet dander, hair and odors. Winix also lists Filter U (1712-0094-00), a separate 12-pack of pet pre-filters to change monthly; it is an add-on rather than the machine’s included pre-filter.

Build the filter work into ownership

Vacuum or brush the fine-mesh pre-filter about every 14 days. If it is very dirty, the manual allows a room-temperature rinse without soap and requires at least 24 hours to dry before use. Do not wash the carbon sheets or HEPA. Winix recommends replacing carbon every three months and HEPA about every 12 months, with actual intervals varying by room conditions. After replacing the filters, press and hold the reset button for five seconds. The filter indicator is a reminder, not a reason to put off checking a visibly loaded pre-filter.

There is a compatibility trap in the exact product listing: the C535 page cross-links Filter Pack P (115119), but the dedicated Filter Pack P page says it is for the Winix 5500 and compatible with the separate washable HEPA 115122. I would not use that carbon-only pack as a C535 replacement. For the C535, the manual and compatible-accessory pages point to Filter A. Check the filter label and compatibility list before ordering any older Winix consumable.

Allow for the body and the airflow clearance

The C535 measures 15 by 8.2 by 23.6 inches and weighs 14.7 pounds. Its footprint is still more than twice the small A231’s width, and the manual calls for 12–18 inches from walls and nearby televisions, radios and other electronics. Leave the upper outlet open and stand it upright on a firm, flat indoor surface. The manual lists AC 120 V / 60 Hz and 70 W; Winix gives a two-year limited warranty for U.S. and Canadian use.

Who should choose the C535?

Choose it when 370 square feet at the repeated-cleaning benchmark, a local odor-responsive Auto mode, a Turbo button and replaceable filter profiles matter more than connected control. It is a poor fit if you require an app, an on-unit PM2.5 number, confirmed particle-sensor Auto, a maximum-noise specification, or a narrow shelf with no clearance. If your room is smaller and you prefer a shorter cylinder with a one-piece all-in-one replacement, compare the Winix A231; its 4.8-ACH area is 246 square feet and its manual does not name a Turbo speed. If you want more capacity, shop by a published 4.8-ACH room figure rather than the C535’s slower-rate headline examples.

For exact controls and the filter sequence, use the Winix C535 manual and C535 product page. The direct Filter A and Filter U pages identify replacement and optional pre-filter compatibility.
