Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the 480-sq-ft repeated-cleaning room fit the library's medium tier but not its large tier?
The page/manual conservative 4.8-ACH figure is 480 sq ft: at least 358, below the 606-sq-ft large threshold.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the exact 480-sq-ft 4.8-ACH figure meet the room minimum exactly?
The conservative AHAM/manual basis is 480 sq ft; a one-square-foot higher requirement is not established.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you use it with physical controls only, without any app function?
The exact page lists no smart features and the manual documents local physical buttons; its app status is no-app.
Explore this need in the finder →If Auto is required, must it respond to odor/gas rather than particles?
The manual identifies the Smart Sensor as detecting odorous gas. A particle-specific Auto target is not documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the three-color quality cue enough, or do you need a numeric PM2.5 value on the unit?
The manual documents red/amber/blue quality LEDs and no numeric on-unit PM2.5 display.
Explore this need in the finder →Would Sleep mode help if the strict maximum noise cap is still unknown?
A dedicated Sleep mode is documented. Winix lists only a 25-dB minimum, not a maximum across settings.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need Turbo without making a strict CFM promise?
The manual lists Turbo. The product page CADR values have no stated unit in its technical table, so a generic CFM threshold is unconfirmed.
Explore this need in the finder →Will a 17.2-inch body width fit your maximum?
The product page and manual agree on a 17.2-inch body width; the supported 17.5-inch numeric cap clears the cabinet width, before the manual’s 12–18-inch placement clearance.
Explore this need in the finder →Is 90 watts inside your rated-power ceiling?
The exact product page and manual both state 90 W; a ceiling one watt lower fails.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you want a compatible general-odor carbon filter rather than an unverified premium profile?
The exact Filter D4 replacement page confirms a general household carbon set; no separate premium profile is established.
Explore this need in the finder →Must a named Pet Allergy filter be included in the purifier box?
The manual lists a permanent pre-filter, four standard carbon sheets and one True HEPA filter; it does not name the Pet Allergy Filter with ARC Formula.
Explore this need in the finder →The Winix D480 is the larger member of the D360/D480 manual family: Winix’s exact U.S. product page and linked manual both identify 480 square feet at the AHAM 4.8-air-changes-per-hour (ACH) benchmark. The same product page also uses a 498-square-foot headline elsewhere, so use the 480-square-foot figure for a conservative repeated-cleaning fit. That lands in this library’s medium tier, above the 358-square-foot minimum but below the 606-square-foot large-room threshold. If your room is between 360 and 480 square feet, the D480’s rating may be more appropriate than the D360’s; a slower one-hour area headline should not replace the stated 4.8-ACH figure.
What the bigger rating changes
The manufacturer describes its AHAM rate around tobacco-smoke removal and an eight-foot ceiling. A connected kitchen, open doorway, higher ceiling, room contents and the speed you can live with still affect practical cleaning. The D480 page lists dust, pollen and smoke CADR values of 312, 348 and 310, but does not state their unit in the technical table. I keep those as raw page values rather than calling them CFM. If a published CFM minimum is an essential requirement, these unitless numbers do not settle it.
The page and manual agree on 17.2 inches of width, 24.2 inches of height and 16.2 pounds. They do not agree on depth: the page gives 11 inches and the manual 11.4. The rated input is 90 watts. Set it on a hard, level surface indoors, away from direct sunlight, with unobstructed airflow; the manual asks for 12–18 inches between the unit and nearby walls or electronics. That clearance matters when measuring a corner, bedside location or cabinet opening. Do not treat the narrowest depth listing as a complete fit plan.
Auto, Sleep and a local-control setup
This is a physical-control purifier, not a connected appliance: the exact technical table lists no smart features, and the manual describes the on-unit buttons. Winix lists five fan speeds, while the manual sequences Low, Medium, High, Turbo and Sleep, with Auto selected separately. It offers Auto mode, but the manual identifies the Smart Sensor as responding to odorous gas rather than particles. Auto varies the fan among low, medium and high as the detected gas level changes; the manual does not establish a separate TVOC value or particle-specific Auto mode.
The unit’s three-color air-quality indicator provides broad good/fair/poor feedback; it is not a numeric on-unit PM2.5 display. A light sensor can move the unit from Auto to Sleep in a dark room and return it when light is present. Sleep dims the air-quality indicator and sets the fan below Low. Winix lists a 25 dB minimum, but no maximum across settings. The manual also says the air-quality sensor takes about four minutes to settle after startup. These are useful operational details, but they do not prove a quiet maximum or continuous particle measurement.
D4 replacement filters and upkeep
The machine uses three stages: a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, activated carbon and True HEPA. Its exact compatible replacement is Winix Filter D4, part 1712-0100-02. The dedicated D4 page says the set includes one True HEPA filter and four carbon filters, a one-year set; the manufacturer recommends changing carbon about every three months and HEPA around every 12 months. The D4 product page uses this exact part number in the page path and compatibility copy, even though its SEO title carries an older-looking “-00” suffix. For a replacement, match the D4 designation and explicit compatibility rather than relying on that title alone.
The pre-filter is permanent: clean it about every 14 days with a vacuum or soft brush. If rinsed, let it dry completely for at least 24 hours. Carbon and HEPA media cannot be washed. Reset the HEPA filter indicator after a replacement. The standard D4 carbon page describes general household odors including cooking, pets and smoke; no separately named pet or premium replacement family is established here. There is also a warranty conflict: the D480 product page says one year while the shared linked manual says two years. Check the warranty terms attached to the exact offer rather than assuming one resolves the other.
Who should shortlist it?
Choose the D480 over the D360 when the larger 480-square-foot repeated-cleaning rating, still-manual controls and same basic odor-Auto/Sleep routine fit better. The larger model adds 120 square feet to the conservative 4.8-ACH figure, but it is also wider and taller, weighs more, and is rated at 90 rather than 65 watts. Its D4 filter is not the D360’s D3. If the room is above 480 square feet, the advertised 498-square-foot headline should not move it into the library’s large tier. If your constraints require verified app control, a numeric particle display, maximum noise, depth below the manual’s figure or a settled warranty duration, this record cannot confirm those needs.
Winix’s product page displayed the D480 in stock on October 24, 2026; availability can change. Its purifier rating is only one part of a workable setup: placement clearance, replacement costs, room openings and a noise level you can tolerate all matter. The review does not use customer testimonials or independent lab testing.
