Honeywell HPA104, HPA200 or HPA304: compare room fit and filter routine

The Honeywell Allergen Plus HPA104, HPA200, and HPA304 look like versions of one familiar console, but they are not interchangeable room ratings. They are the small, middle, and higher-capacity part of an older HEPA family: the white HPA104 is published for 155 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour, the black HPA200 for 310, and the white HPA304 for 465. The licensed Honeywell Store now marks each exact configuration discontinued, so use this comparison when identifying existing units or assessing a specific offer—not as a claim of current availability.

Choose by repeated-cleaning capacity first

When the room-area condition is essential, use the stated 4.8-ACH figure instead of a general “small,” “medium,” or “large” label. The HPA104's 155-square-foot rating clears a 140-square-foot compact threshold but falls short of a 219-square-foot small requirement. The HPA200's 310 clears 219 but not the 358-square-foot medium tier. The HPA304's 465 clears 358 and remains below a 606-square-foot large requirement. The rating basis uses smoke CADR on the highest setting; an open floor plan, tall ceiling, obstructed intake, or lower speed can change the real result.

Don't confuse their pollutant CADR values: HPA104 is listed at 100 smoke /106 dust /100 pollen CFM; HPA200 at 200/190/180; HPA304 at 300/320/300. A single numeric CADR requirement should be compared with the smoke number, not the largest figure in the row. Also watch for a HPA200 page paragraph that repeats HPA304's 465-square-foot language. Its exact model table and Honeywell product page both say 310; the conflicting generic paragraph is not a second larger rating.

One, two, or three replaceable HEPA filters

The main ownership difference after room capacity is the count of Type R HEPA cartridges: one in HPA104, two in HPA200, and three in HPA304. Each uses one Type A odor-reducing pre-filter. Honeywell's guidance is approximately one year for R filters and three months for the A pre-filter, with actual life depending on the air and operating conditions. That means the HPA304's higher room rating comes with three replacement cartridges to verify, not just a larger fan. Check the exact model label and compatible filter type before buying a used machine; similar Honeywell letter codes do not guarantee the same media.

The family manual describes three everyday cleaning selections and a separate Turbo setting, plus filter-check reminders, timed shutoff, and panel dimming. These are local controls, not particle-sensor Auto or an app. The filter reminder tracks use rather than real-time air quality. Marketing language such as “quiet” does not establish a specific dB(A) limit. If monitoring, remote scheduling, measured PM2.5, or a strict sound cap is central to your plan, look to a model with that exact capability documented rather than making one up for this group.

Which one fits the household?

For a room that genuinely stays under 155 square feet, HPA104 is the smallest and uses the fewest R filters. HPA200 is the middle choice for a room up to its published 310-square-foot basis; the official pages disagree about dimensions, so measure the individual unit when placement limits are tight. HPA304 is the area choice when 310 is insufficient but 465 is adequate; its approximately 20 × 10.8 × 22.3-inch body needs breathing room around the grilles, and its three-filter replacement set is the most involved routine of these three.

All three are reference-only because the exact licensed Store records say discontinued. A remaining-stock page or secondhand listing can refer to another suffix, an old unit, or a filter bundle. Confirm the model label, condition, returns, and replacement media; do not count two packaged purifiers as one larger-room machine. If buying new is a requirement, compare current manufacturer products on their own repeated-cleaning area, verified controls, and annual media count rather than assuming an HPA family member is a direct successor.
