Winix model comparison

Winix XQ vs D480: different room size, controls and Filter X

The Winix XQ and D480 are distinct U.S. purifier offers, not size options of the same filter system. The XQ page identifies SKU 1022-0217-00; D480 has its own SKU 1022-0221-02. Both have manufacturer instructions and a named compatible replacement, but they differ in room rating, connected features, filter routine and cabinet size. The main decision is whether the XQ’s larger repeated-cleaning area and extra controls are useful enough to justify a much taller, heavier machine and its separate Filter X supplies.

Check the room requirement first

Winix lists the XQ at 714 square feet at AHAM’s 4.8-air-changes-per-hour (ACH) benchmark; its linked manual gives a 698-square-foot verified room size. Use 698 conservatively. The D480’s exact page AHAM table and shared manual agree on 480 square feet at 4.8 ACH, although another page headline says 498. At the conservative figures, both meet the guide’s medium-room range and XQ also qualifies for the 606-square-foot large tier. The D480 stops below that tier. Do not use the separate one-hour-area examples as though they were 4.8-ACH room ratings: Winix ties those slower room/time claims to a different interval.

These ratings are not a guarantee for a connected kitchen, unusually high ceiling or multiple open rooms. The XQ’s manual and page specify the 4.8-ACH benchmark, while actual airflow still depends on layout and placement. For a strict minimum, keep the conservative number as a hard boundary: 698 square feet for XQ and 480 for D480.

Different control and feedback plans

The D480 is the simpler local-control choice. Its exact page lists no smart features; the manual documents physical settings, an odor/gas-responsive Auto sensor and a three-color air-quality indicator. It has no documented numeric on-unit PM2.5 reading. XQ adds Wi-Fi, Winix Smart App and Alexa support alongside physical controls. Its page identifies triple smart sensors for fine particles and odor, and the linked manual describes a numeric fine-particle display down to 2.5 microns. Both have Auto, manual speeds, Sleep and a timer, but only the XQ has app access and the documented numeric display. The XQ manual lists one-, two-, four-, eight- and twelve-hour timer choices; the D480’s manual and page do not document a timer.

The XQ page lists five fan speeds, which the manual names Auto, Low, Medium, High and Turbo; Sleep is a separate mode. It also documents child lock and a button to switch PlasmaWave on or off. The product page describes a light-responsive Sleep routine. The D480 has its own light-triggered Sleep behavior, but neither model publishes a maximum noise level across settings. XQ’s 27 dB and D480’s 25 dB are minimum figures only. If noise at the speed you will actually use is an essential cap, neither listing resolves that.

Match filter identities and care schedules

Both machines combine a washable pre-filter, coated deodorization carbon, True HEPA and PlasmaWave, but their replacement parts are not interchangeable. The XQ uses Filter X 1712-0089-01. Winix describes its two-HEPA/two-carbon set as a complete year, with the component filters listed for about 12 months. Its manual shows two of each filter type in the new-unit package. D480 uses the distinct Filter D4 1712-0100-02: its compatible set includes one HEPA and four carbon sheets, with carbon replaced around every three months and HEPA around every twelve. Follow the exact manual and purchase listing rather than ordering by the shared Winix name.

Both manuals tell owners to clean a permanent pre-filter about every 14 days. If rinsed, let it dry for at least 24 hours; the carbon and HEPA media are not washable. XQ’s annual two-pack can mean a substantial periodic replacement purchase, whereas D480’s carbon pieces are refreshed on a shorter cadence. Neither source establishes a distinct premium or dedicated pet replacement profile for these exact models.

Place the whole appliance, not just its outline

The XQ measures 14.6 × 14.6 × 31.3 inches, weighs 30.86 pounds and has hidden caster wheels; the D480 is listed at 17.2 inches wide and 24.2 inches high, weighing 16.2 pounds. D480’s page and manual disagree on depth, so a tight-fitting location is unresolved. Both guides require 12–18 inches of clearance around the operating unit from walls and nearby electronics, plus an indoor hard, level surface and unobstructed flow. XQ’s smaller footprint is offset by extra height and weight; its wheels help with movement but do not turn it into a light portable purifier.

Choose XQ when a room benefits from the larger conservative 4.8-ACH area and the app, numeric display, timer, child lock, switchable PlasmaWave and casters fit your routine. Choose D480 when 480 square feet is enough and you would rather avoid an app-connected model with a much larger case. A product-page CADR table for each has values without a clear unit, so neither is a verified CFM match. The XQ page and linked manual both state a two-year warranty, although the manual title says XQ Pro; D480’s page and manual disagree on duration. Check exact offer paperwork if warranty length is decisive.

Read the separate Winix XQ review and Winix D480 review for individual setup, placement and filter instructions. Neither device removes carbon monoxide; retain a separate working CO alarm and address pollutant sources.
