Make filter care and placement part of the choice

Every purifier in this three-model comparison needs physical room around its body and periodic attention to its filter. A small footprint is not the same as a small installation: the Core manuals ask for at least 15 inches of clearance on every side and advise keeping airflow away from curtains or other obstructions. Measure the body, then measure a second, larger operating envelope around it.

Set up correctly before the first run

Start on a flat, stable surface near the outlet. Remove the new filter's plastic packaging before operation; the manual warns that a wrapped filter will not clean air and may contribute to overheating. The 600S-P has upper and lower housing sections that separate for filter access and must be aligned and reassembled as instructed. Keep the top outlet clear and route the cord so it does not cross a walkway or sit under a rug.

The manuals also warn against wet or excessively humid placements. Keep the inside dry, avoid placing the machine where an air conditioner can create moisture buildup and unplug it before cleaning or servicing. These are basic steps, but they matter more than a feature label if the purifier must run unattended for long periods.

Clean the outside layer, not the sealed filter core

The outer pre-filter catches larger material such as hair and lint. Levoit recommends brushing or vacuuming it every two to four weeks. The main and carbon filter layers are not washed; replace them according to the exact manual. Dusty homes, pets, smoke and long daily use may shorten the life compared with the typical interval. The 300S-P manual says its filter is usually checked/replaced on a six-to-eight-month schedule; the 400S-P and 600S-P manuals recommend about 12 months. Treat these as planning guidance rather than fixed lifespans.

When a filter light turns on, inspect airflow, odors and visible loading before replacing it. After a replacement, reset the indicator as the manual instructs. If the light appears early or the unit runs in a high-particle environment, do not ignore the condition merely because a calendar date has not arrived.

Keep the laser sensor clear

Dust on the sensor opening can affect its reading. The manuals describe unplugging the purifier and using a vacuum at the sensor openings. Follow the exact procedure and interval for your model. A sensor that stays at one color does not prove the room is free of pollutants: it may need cleaning, an ultrasonic humidifier can create misleading particle signals, and the sensor does not detect gases.

More on sensor limits is in the PM2.5 guide. For exact body dimensions and filter differences, see the 300S-P, 400S-P and 600S-P assessments.
