Setup and care
Set up and maintain the Winix 5520
The 5520 arrives with its filter set sealed inside the unit for shipping. Before plugging it in, remove those bags and put the media back in the order Winix specifies. A dark or blank display does not mean the appliance has a problem: the first startup cycles the air-quality light, then the sensor takes about four minutes to begin normal detection. That short wait is especially relevant if you are using Auto to react to the manual’s odor-gas sensor.
Choose a safe, open location
Set the purifier indoors on a hard, level surface, away from direct sunlight. Keep 12–18 inches between it and walls and nearby televisions, radios, or other electronics, as the manual advises. The body is 13.59 inches wide, 8.27 inches deep, and 22.17 inches high, but these dimensions do not include the airflow clearance around the front intake and top outlet. Do not tuck the front grille against a sofa or place anything on the outlet. The manual also cautions against humid or wet rooms, steam, heat sources, and oily residues such as those produced near a deep fryer.
Follow the supplied safety instructions rather than treating a purifier as a substitute for ventilation or a detector. Winix says the unit will not remove carbon monoxide. Keep the appliance away from flammable gases and do not operate it while using airborne insecticide products. Unplug it before cleaning or moving it.
Unpack the filter set
- Switch the unit off and pull the upper part of the front panel gently toward you.
- Remove the fine-mesh pre-filter, then remove the protective bag around the main filters behind it. Do not run the purifier with shipping plastic left in place.
- Take the filter media out of its bag. Place the True HEPA element at the back, the AOC carbon filter in the middle, and the pre-filter at the front.
- Seat each component securely, close the panel, and connect the AC 120-volt plug.
The replacement named for the 5520 is Winix Filter Q, SKU 1712-0123-00. Its compatibility page lists 5510, 5520, and 5530. Check the number on the filter before ordering; similarly named Winix filter kits are not interchangeable just because they share the brand.
Use local buttons first, then add Wi-Fi if useful
Wi-Fi is optional for running the 5520. The manual says no software or firmware is required for basic operation. The local panel controls power, Auto, fan speed, PlasmaWave, and filter reset. A short press of the Wi-Fi/pairing control toggles Wi-Fi; holding it for three seconds starts pairing. The product page lists remote Smart App control, Alexa support, and a timer in the app, but does not give timer increments. If you want a schedule independent of your phone, verify that limitation before choosing it.
Auto responds to the sensor described in the manual as detecting odorous gas. Its three-color light reports broad quality bands, not a numeric PM2.5 concentration. The manual identifies the four manual fan levels as Low, Medium, High, and Turbo; Winix’s page counts five fan speeds because Auto is another setting. In a dark room the light sensor dims the indicators and lowers the fan for Sleep, then returns to Auto when the room brightens. Sleep disables PlasmaWave by default, though the manual says you can switch PlasmaWave back on. A chirp or buzz while that technology runs is described as normal; use its button to turn it off if you prefer not to use it.
Clean the washable pre-filter
Winix recommends cleaning the pre-filter every 14 days. A vacuum or soft brush is the routine method. If it is unusually dirty, the manual allows rinsing it in room-temperature water without soap or detergent. Let it dry for 24 hours or longer before putting it back. Do not wash the AOC carbon or True HEPA media. They are replacement filters, not washable parts. The manual estimates about 12 months for each main element, while noting that room conditions can shorten the interval.
When the filter indicator illuminates, replace the carbon and HEPA components in the Filter Q set. Close the front panel and, with the unit on, hold the Filter Reset button for at least five seconds until it beeps and the indicator clears. The reset only resets the reminder; it does not extend a filter’s service life. For general cleaning, unplug the unit, vacuum the interior, wipe it with a damp cloth, and dry it fully before reconnecting. Clean the housing every one to two months, avoid solvents and flammable sprays, and never let moisture remain inside.
Keep the model’s ordinary operation separate from its optional claims: the carbon stage is a general odor-control filter, not a documented specialized smoke or pet cartridge. And while Winix lists a 392-square-foot 4.8-ACH rating, room layout and the speed you can comfortably use still affect practical results.
