Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Will one Blue Pure 311i Max meet the 358-ft² medium-room threshold at the explicit 4.8-ACH rate?
Yes. Blueair repeats 439 ft² at 4.8 ACH in its detailed product table and FAQ. Do not substitute the page title's older 465-ft² figure or the slower interval-size claims.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a five-color PM2.5 status light enough, or do I need a number on the machine?
The manual documents a five-color PM2.5 status indicator, not a numeric concentration on the unit. Choose color-only status if it is enough; a required on-unit number excludes this model.
Explore this need in the finder →Do I need automatic fan-speed changes in response to particle levels?
Yes. Auto mode adjusts the fan from the PM2.5 sensor; Night and three manual numbered speeds are also available.
Explore this need in the finder →Must app control be available together with physical buttons?
Yes. This model supports Wi-Fi/app control and also has local on/standby and fan-speed buttons. App setup uses Bluetooth and 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the body fit under a 20-inch maximum-height limit?
The listed body height is 19 inches. This is shell height only; leave its air openings clear.
Explore this need in the finder →Will the body fit a 13-inch maximum-width position?
The body width is listed at 12.5 inches, so it meets a 13-inch shell limit; that does not include clearance for airflow.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I use the documented base Particle & Carbon setup, without assuming a compatible SmokeBlock replacement?
Blueair's exact filter page contradicts itself about whether that filter fits the non-plus 311i Max. The base Particle & Carbon filter is documented, but a specialty replacement is not counted as a confirmed fit.
Explore this need in the finder →The Blue Pure 311i Max is the lower-profile member of Blueair’s 311i Max pair. Its current U.S. product page rates it for 439 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour, with a 19-inch body and 32-watt listed input. It is a medium-room candidate when a five-color particle-status light is enough. The 311i+ Max is taller, draws more power and carries a higher 4.8-ACH room figure; the names are similar, but they are not one model.
A medium-room rating with one explicit comparison basis
Use 439 square feet as the room comparison number: Blueair labels it 4.8 ACH in the product table and repeats it in the model FAQ. The same page gives 1,054 square feet for a 30-minute interval and 2,107 square feet in an hour. Those slower figures are not equivalents to the 4.8-ACH claim. The page title still says 465 square feet, so the explicit current spec/FAQ figure is the safer value for a strict room-area requirement. The room recommendation is for a single closed room; an open floor plan, ceiling height and furniture placement can reduce how useful a rating feels in practice.
The 439-square-foot figure meets this library’s medium-room threshold but not its 606-square-foot large-room threshold. If room capacity is the decision, the 311i+ Max’s listed 525 square feet is the step up, while the 211i Max is a separate larger option rated at 674 square feet. That difference matters more than the shared “311i” label.
Automatic mode and a color signal, not a numerical PM display
The manual identifies a PM2.5 sensor and a five-color status indicator, but it does not show a numerical particle concentration on the purifier’s own panel. The panel uses an on/standby button and a fan-speed button to select Auto, Night or one of three numbered fan levels. Auto changes speed based on detected PM2.5; Night is the lowest setting. A child lock prevents accidental setting changes. If the requirement is “show me a number at the machine,” this model does not meet it. If a color indication and automatic response are enough, it can.
Wi-Fi enables app functions and the app can monitor filter usage; the manual requires a 2.4-GHz network and Bluetooth for first-time setup. The unit can still be started and adjusted with its physical controls, but an app-capable model is not a manual-only option. Avoid pairing if you do not want app functions, but do not confuse that choice with buying a product that has no app capability.
Routine care is straightforward; replacement compatibility deserves a check
The base offer includes a Particle & Carbon main cartridge and a washable fabric pre-filter. Blueair says the main filter may last up to nine months, and the manual gives a six-to-nine-month interval depending on use and air conditions, with the red indicator as the replacement cue. The fabric cover can be vacuumed with a soft brush and washed according to its care label; let it dry before returning it to the unit. The main cartridge is not washed. Replacing it means unplugging the purifier, rotating and lifting the top, removing the pre-filter and noise shield, exchanging the wrapped cartridge, reassembling the stack and holding the fan-speed button for about 15 seconds to reset the filter light.
Do not buy a replacement solely because the package says “311i Max” or “311i+ Max.” Blueair’s 311i Max filter page names the non-plus model in its heading and compatibility paragraph, but an FAQ on that same page says the filter is only compatible with the 311i+ Max. That internal mismatch leaves the replacement bridge unclear. The everyday filter supplied with the purifier is documented; a specialty SmokeBlock or AllergenBlock match should not be assumed from the page’s menu alone. Check the label inside the purifier and have Blueair confirm the exact replacement before ordering. This unresolved replacement-language issue does not alter the model’s room, control or body facts.
Compact footprint, but not a confirmed dB(A) fit
The body is listed at 19 inches high and 12.5 inches wide and deep; the product weighs 7.8 pounds and lists 32 watts. Its square footprint is the same as its 311i+ Max sibling, but it is two inches shorter and uses six fewer listed watts. Keep the intake and top outlet clear rather than treating the body dimensions as the total opening needed beside furniture. Blueair gives a sound range of 23–50 dB. The source does not specify A-weighting, so the range cannot pass this library’s strict dB(A) maximum.
Blueair’s technical table separates CADR by pollutant: 365 CFM pollen, 314 CFM dust and 283 CFM smoke. Those are not interchangeable into one generic CADR value. A strict minimum-CADR question therefore remains unresolved here rather than selecting the highest or lowest pollutant figure for every need.
This model fits best when a bedroom, office or similar room falls within its 439-square-foot 4.8-ACH figure, a color signal is acceptable, and the shorter body is worth more than the Plus sibling’s higher listed capacity. Choose the 311i+ Max if the 525-square-foot 4.8-ACH figure is essential and its extra height and wattage fit your space. Choose the 211i Max if you specifically want a numerical particle reading on the unit and need a larger listed room size. None of these models turns a sensor reading into a gas measurement, and none removes the need to leave its airflow path open.
